Michael Pisaro-Liu’s A Wave and Waves thrives on barely audible micro-events: seeds on glass, sandpaper on stone, the tearing of paper, a soft brush on the tam-tam. 100 percussion instruments, 100 performers together form a paradox: Out of barely audible single actions, a total sound grows, condensing into a continuous wave motion — an ocean of small noises. Pisaro-Liu calls it “confounding the small and the large.” The structure makes this audible: a single, 35-minute arc of sound — followed by four minutes of silence — and finally a hundred small waves that travel through the ensemble. The audience sits right in the middle of it, surrounded by sound rather than facing it. Speak Percussion presents the work in collaboration with the Innsbruck Music School — a polyphonic collective that carries this final evening of the festival. “Love is Louder” does not end here as a slogan, but as an experience: in the shared act of listening to what is otherwise overheard.
