PHACE – Ensemble for New Music

In 2023, during a trip to Europe, Canadian composer Corie Rose Soumah found solace in a novel by an Austrian author: Marlen Haushofer’s Die Mauer moved Soumah so deeply that she was able to surrender to her grief and found precisely in that the comfort and the capacity for change and growth. Under the influence of these existential impressions, her string quartet We, to be so transformed was created, which at Klangspuren is paired with a new commissioned work for Ensemble PHACE.

The other four short pieces of the evening are by Zara Ali. The electronic composition Red City sends samples of the Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart shimmering through the room in a three-dimensional sonic aesthetic. In thermo_doxa, Ali examines what links heat and dogma — more precisely, dogmatic religions from hot climate zones. The chamber music piece Passing Fragrance, Hidden Veil is inspired by a painting by the Pakistani artist Abdur Rahman Chugthai, while in Circularscrape the sounds of a spinning coin await their own transformation through digital means.
