Georg Friedrich Haas has long been known for breaking boundaries — escaping tonality, moving beyond euphony, and pushing the limits of what an ensemble can achieve. His new, one-hour work Ausschweifen spans a symbolic triangle of three sonic worlds: floating overtones in search of transcendence, dense microtonal clusters — archaic, ecstatic, physical — and a late-Romantic tonality in quarter-tones, inspired by the nearly forgotten Richard Heinrich Stein (1882–1942). These three worlds seek no reconciliation. They collide, give way, return — a movement of sound felt more than heard. This is a loudness beyond decibels: not loudness in the classical sense, but that which asserts itself, that which insists. Ensemble Proton Bern knows these sonic worlds inside out.
