What happens when the music falls silent, allowing the act of hearing itself to become the event? The festival does not begin with a drumroll, but with a radical return to the ear as our interface with the world. In Robin Hoffmann’s silent work Œhr, the organ of hearing becomes the sole protagonist: dancer Edivaldo Ernesto stages the physical act of listening, making the silence tangible. The piece sets the point of departure for a festival that understands music as a social practice. From this silence emerges a new awareness of space. In Georges Aperghis’ Die Wände haben Ohren, the SZentrum itself becomes a complicit witness: the walls appear as reservoirs of past experiences and the orchestra gives them voice in a play that is at once cheerfully grotesque and breathtakingly virtuosic. Still, listening remains no end in itself. The deepest emotional arc is drawn by Liza Lim’s A Sutured World. The cello becomes a needle, tenderly stitching closed the fissures of our present moment. It is a beauty that arises from vulnerability and does not hide what is broken, but gives it a voice. “Love is Louder” begins this evening not with volume, but with the decision to make our time radically audible.
