Two commissioned works this year engage intensively with the city of Schwaz: Claudia Molitor and Anto Sophia Manhartsberger both work with an alert eye for memory and the present, with sounds and stories that are otherwise easily overheard.

The German-British composer and sound artist Claudia Molitor is in residence in Schwaz for several months in 2026 as city artist, where she is developing a new work commissioned by Klangspuren Schwaz that can be realized in various forms: as an installation, a soundwalk, or a performance. The material emerges from conversations, interviews, field recordings, and collaborative research: personal memories of the city’s residents and the defining sounds of the town lay the foundation.

The project views listening as a form of intergenerational care. Memories are not only preserved — they are carried forward as living knowledge into the future. In this way, “Remember the Future” becomes a collective process that binds individual experience to shared social responsibility.

Anto Sophia Manhartsberger focuses on a familiar acoustic signal: the bells of the Schwaz parish church. The installation plays with this iconic sound, which once set the rhythm of urban life and today usually fades into background noise. Through strategically inserted sounds that are related to the bell motif while simultaneously alienating it, the perception of everyday life shifts. A seemingly familiar acoustic signal suddenly becomes jarring — and so returns to our consciousness. The urban space itself becomes a place of attentive listening, in which any sound can become a potential musical event.
