Humankind has always wanted to play God just a little. Nowadays, even life and death have become commodities: the longevity movement promises a longer life — provided you pay enough — and in some places, even assisted dying is a product to be sold. In Jonah Haven’s comical-surreal musical drama Naomi, the company Exit Mundi Inc. takes it a step further: it sells apocalypses, and has been doing so for 20 years. When one day a dedicated employee encounters a talking fox who gives her the name Naomi — the Beautiful, the Honest — she plunges into an identity crisis. How many deaths is she already responsible for? Soprano Juliet Fraser slips virtuosically into six roles for this world premiere. Dilay Doğanay’s piece also carries a small narrative: it sets to music the process of interacting with an AI. As in the algorithmic generation of an image, a single musical core idea is gently altered and transformed through endless feedback loops, until the finished sonic picture stands fully formed in the room.
