Calefax Reed Quintet

The equinox marks that fleeting axis where light and shadow stand in balance. In the stillness of the Kirche St. Martin, this moment becomes a meditation. The Calefax Reed Quintet — the legendary ensemble that invented the reed quintet in 1985 — is known for an immediate, almost pop-inflected joy in playing, holding old and new music in high tension.

At the program’s center is a sonic shadow that has traveled through 500 years of time: from Bach’s farewell chorales to Johannes Brahms’s final greeting, this melody shapes an entire architecture of leave-taking. A bright, sharply rhythmic counterpoint is offered by Bach’s motet Jesu, meine Freude: in a virtuosic interplay of grief and defiance, it releases an almost dance-like elemental force — a powerful “Nevertheless.”

With Cantus Fixus, Daan Manneke carries the compositional craft of the old masters forward into a contemporary musical language, transforming listening into an active penetration of layers of time and sound. The radical turning point comes with Carola Bauckholt’s Zugvögel: here, human feeling yields to the raw energy of nature. Thirteen bird calls, imitated with uncanny realism, unleash a sonic spectacle that knows no nostalgia. It is a departure that follows only instinct and the wind — a liberation from the pain of parting in a moment of perfect balance.
